American Donut Halls with Strawberry Syrup topcook.tomathouse.com
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup strawberry jam
- 5 tbsp. l. Sambuca liqueur
- 2 1/4 cups premium wheat flour
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Cinnamon sugar, for sprinkling
Preparation:
- Prepare strawberry syrup: Combine 1 cup water, jam, and 2 tablespoons sambuca in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until thickened, 20-25 minutes. Transfer the syrup to a bowl and let it cool, stirring occasionally.
- Meanwhile, prepare the donuts: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Add cream, eggs, vanilla, and the remaining 3 tablespoons sambuca and mix until smooth.
- Pour 1 cm of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed saucepan, place over medium heat and heat to 180°C (350°F). Fry the donuts, dropping the batter by the tablespoonful, until golden brown, about 4 minutes per frying. (If the donuts are frying too quickly, reduce the heat.) Using a slotted spoon, transfer the donuts to paper towels, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Serve with strawberry syrup.
